My Boyfriend the Dork Ch. 1

One might brag about their boy friend, the athlete, the pretty boy, the popular guy. For me, the dork. Now, people might say, how am I going to brag about a dork? There is absolutely nothing to brag about. That’s where most people are wrong. Sure, they’re unpopular, some are physically challenged and definitely an idiot when it comes to girls. But, when you look underneath all that, how ever dorky all that may be, you might find someone else; someone you didn’t see before.
It was that way for me too. At first, I thought he was just another dork, shy, clumsy, and everything else a dork should be.
I’m guessing that he tried, but he just doesn’t fit in with the crowd. So, I think he just stopped trying. Well, at least until I came along.

Once upon a time, there lived a girl. A girl who was forced to follow the ways of her society. It seems like everyday, her aim is perfection. Perfect hair, perfect teeth, perfect nails, and everything else.
Okay, well, maybe not as dramatic as that, but you get my point. Everyone around me are so image conscious and they place so much value on what other people think, that they forget to value what they think of themselves. Too bad that I’m exactly like them. Every minute of my life has been spent on worrying about what other people think of me. Everyday, my goal is to be accepted by the people I hang out with. Acceptance is important…isn’t it?
The first time I met him, he was awkward, shy and he also avoided me a little. I think he was a bit scared, because I took the initiative to talk to him. Well, he wasn’t going to talk to me first, so what was I supposed to do?
But before we continue, maybe I should just say this. It all started because of a bet.

“Seul gi-ah!”, “Hurry up! We’re gonna be late!”
Hmm… my living alarm clock, or in other words, my mom.
Every morning it’s always like this. It’s not my fault I have to look pretty!
Yes, this is my life. I get up every morning with the goal of being perfect. It does seem like I’m aiming very high, but it’s worth trying!  “Araso! I’m hurrying!”  I rushed down the stairs, grabbed my breakfast, a piece of toast, and put on my fabulous new shoes, a pair of Manolo Blahnik!
“I told you they look good on me!”  “Yeah, yeah, they look pretty!” she replied.  “Annyonghi kaseyo!” I yelled as I ran for the door.
My name is Bae Seul Gi. I’m currently 20 years old and a university student. Although every morning and almost every minute of my life I try to be perfect, honestly, I thought that being perfect is not important, that is, until I became one with the in-crowd. Then, I changed for some reason. I thought since I became popular, I should act like someone popular, shouldn’t I? Sometimes, I still think if you could accept yourself, you shouldn’t worry about what other people think about you. Then later, I found out that it’s easier said than done.
Walking to campus in my Manolos isn’t exactly what you call comfortable, but beauty has a price! As I walked down the path way, people waved and greeted me. It wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. I was used to the attention.
Then, I heard a voice from a distance. “Seul gi-ah!” Meet Park Soo Jin. She’s my best friend in the whole entire world. She might one of the few people around me who sometimes also think that perfection isn’t everything. “Annyeong!” I said. “What’s up?” I asked. “Nothing, except for the fact that Si won has been following you for the past ten minutes!” “Are you serious?” I asked. “Where is he?” “Is he behind me?” I asked wondering. So, I started to look around for a tall, good-looking guy.  And then, an extremely charming voice behind me said, “Annyeong”, “looking for me?”

I turned around and there he was. Choi Si Won, tall, cute, and charming popular guy. In other words, every girl’s crush, including mine. He’s the one guy every girl wants and every guy wants to be.
“Si won-sshi! Annyeong!” I said nervously. “What are you guys doing?” he asked.
“Oh, nothing. Just talking.” “Well, Im gonna go now. I have a class. Bye, Seul gi!” said Soo jin as she walked away.
‘She does not have any classes in the morning! Oh, great!’ I thought to myself. “Well, Im going to class too. See ya!” I said as I walked off nervously. I was so scared of messing up in front of him. I’ve only known him for a month now. I haven’t told him about how I feel yet, but Im kind of guessing he knows, because Im always so nervous in front of him. Well, he should know why by now.
“That was major progress this morning.” teased Soo Jin. “Shut up.” “Don’t set me up like that ever again!” “I thought I was gonna faint from hyperventilation” I said as I continued to walk to the university café. Soo jin laughed. “Seriously, why cant you just tell him for me?” I asked. “Please, just do me this one favor!” I begged. “No.” answered Soo jin. “Why not?” I asked.
“Because it is not my job to tell him that. If you like him, then you tell him!” she said.  I frowned and hung my head. “Well, at least you know he thinks you’re pretty.” said Soo jin as she walked up to the nearest empty table. I lifted my head instantly. “He said that?” I asked excitedly. “Yeah.” “He told me when we were all hanging out for the first time.” I thought I was going to scream. I had never felt so happy in my entire life. I smiled so wide, I thought my mouth was about to rip apart. “Well, I can’t deny that.” “I am pretty!” I bragged. “Please, get over yourself!” said Soo jin laughing.
“Seriously!” “I bet I can transform the dorkiest person in here to one of the cutest and most popular person in our school!” I exclaimed.
“You want to back that up?” asked Soo jin. “Fine.” “We’ll have a bet.” “If you can transform the dorkiest guy in this place to the most good looking and most popular guy in our school in two weeks, I’ll tell Si won that you like him.” “But, if you can’t, you have to tell him!” said Soo jin. I gulped. “I have to tell him?”
“Yep!” She smirked. ‘Eottokeyo?’ ‘Im too nervous to tell him, but I cant back out!’ I took a deep breath and said, “Fine!” “We’ll have a bet.” “If can’t transform this guy in two weeks, I’ll tell him that I like him.” “Two weeks, not a minute less, and not a minute more.” I said, trying to sound confident.  “Deal.” said Soo jin. We both then shook hands smiling.

Suddenly, I heard a tray hit the floor. Soo jin and I both turned to see what happened. “Yah!” “Watch where you’re going!” yelled a girl. “Ch-choe song hamnida!” said the guy beside her stammering. “H-here, let me clean it for you!”
He then took a tissue a tried to clean the latte off her purse. Instead, he latte spread even more. “Sorry! I’m really sorry!” he said. The girl then walked off angrily. The guy seemed very embarrassed, but then again, who wouldn’t be.
“Ooh!” “Mocha latte and a suede purse, not a very good combination!” I said as I turned my eyes to the guy. He was wearing a dark blue sweater and a thick, black framed glasses. He looked like he can use a make over or two.
Soo jin laughed and said, “Looks like we’ve found our guy!”
I turned to her and said, “Who? Him? You want me to transform…him?”
“Waeyo? Too challenging?” she asked as she took another sip of her coffee.
“Anniyo, its just that I don’t know him.”  “Seul gi-ah, most of people you know aren’t dorks, remember?” said Soo jin, and it is true. “Okay, araso!” “He’s the one.” “God knows he needs it.” I said as I got up from my chair.
I took a deep breath and started to walk towards his table. ‘I can do this!’ ‘Im the fun and outgoing Bae Seul Gi’ ‘Geez, why am I so nervous?’
I got to his table and said, “Uh, annyeong! What’s up? My name’s Seul gi. What’s yours?”  He lifted his head and his eyes widened. He looked at me as if I was someone or something he had never seen before; like… an alien? I was really nervous that he was about to blow me off. My heart kept beating so fast. Then he finally said, “Y-Yoo chun, P-Park Yoo Chun.” I felt a sigh of relief. Then, he got up and walked away. ‘Great, now he blows me off.’ I could just hear Soo jin laughing from a distance. I ran back to my table and got my purse. Soo jin was just sitting there smiling. “Thanks a lot!” I said. I got out of the café and went after him. “Chogiyo! Yoo chun-sshi! Wait up!” I yelled. I must be desperate to run after him like that. “Yeah?” he asked. I finally caught my breath and said, “So, um…” “I, uh…” “Look, it’s not easy for me to ask you this, but can you do something for me? I know we don’t know each other, but I need you. See, me and my friend, we made a bet. I have to turn a…dork, no offense, into one of the cutest guys at our school. If I lose, I’ll have to confess to this guy that I like him. Can you please help me?”
“No. Mianhae.” said Yoo chun. “De?” “Waeyo?” I asked. “I just…don’t want to be a part of your bet.”
“But, I need you! Please! Just help me out this one time!” I said. “I promise I’ll do anything if you help me out.”  Then, he turns around and said, “The answer is still no. Mianhae.”  I stepped in front of him and said, “Why not?” “If you’re gonna refuse, at least give me a reason!”
“I don’t have a reason, but the answer is still no” said Yoo chun. ‘God I can’t believe Im about to do this, but…’
I took a deep breath, kneeled down in front of him and said, “Yoo chun-sshi please, help me out! Im…begging you!” ‘Wow, I must be really desperate’ I thought to myself.
“What are you doing?” “Get up!” said Yoo chun. “If I get up, will you help me?” “No, I still won’t. But, this is just a bit embarrassing. People are staring at you.” said Yoo chun.  “Look, Im sorry I can’t help you, but…” “I have to go now.”
He walked away, leaving me kneeling on the ground. I can feel my tear ducts flooding. ‘How can he still refuse even after I knelt down in front of him?’ I thought. ‘I guess I better get up now.’ ‘I think I’ll need to practice confessing to Si won in front of the mirror tonight.’  At that moment, I can feel a tear running down my cheek. I wiped it off and started walking home.
